Abstract:

Research materials used in editing the book, "An American Odyssey: the autobiography of a 19th c. Scotsman Robert Brownlee at the request of his children, Napa County, California, October, 1892," based on the life of a 19th century Scottish immigrant to the United States. Includes publisher query letters and responses, permission letters, correspondence, reviews, and geneaological records of the Brownlee (Brownlie) family. Also includes a family cookbook, research materials on Bonkle Village, Scotland, and published information on the book as well as the historic restoration of the Brownlee house at the Historic Arkansas Museum in Little Rock, Ark. Includes photographs (black and white, color) of Brownlee family members, Bonkle Village (Scotland) landmarks, the Historic Arkansas Museum Brownlee site, other Arkansas landmarks, Napa, California, landmarks, and various architectural details. Historic Arkansas Museum photographs include historical reenactments of Arkansas frontier life and Brownlee house interior and exterior. Originally known as the Noland House, Etter's research led to correctly identifying the structure as the Brownlee House. As a result, it is sometimes referred to as the Brownlee-Noland House.

In 1836, Robert Brownlee, stonemason, set out from Bonkle Village in the Scottish Lowlands to seek his fortune in America. He found work in New York and North Carolina before settling in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1849 he traveled to California during the Gold Rush via the Southern Route. In California he set up and ran a tent store in the mining town of Agua Fria and did quite well. He returned to Little Rock to sell his house, visited Scotland, and married. He then returned to California and settled in Napa, California on his ranch, Sunnyside Farm.
